Who are we?

Arclight Insights is a research organization dedicated to solving problems in public health through the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence, in a way that involves community and supplements expertise.

The efforts of public health have been arguably some of the most beneficial endeavors by and for humanity across all time. The tools, techniques, and essential services utilized by public health organizations, while effective, have changed very little in the past 50 years. This is not entirely a bad thing; science, especially science which impacts people to the degree public health does, should be methodical, pragmatic, and regulated.

However, the connectedness of our modern world means that information flows faster than ever. Events cascade through networks, both virtually and in the real world. Information, both factual and false, spreads as virally as, well, viruses. Our society is perched on the edge of self-organized criticality, and we need new tools to mitigate pandemic-level tipping points.

Arclight Insights began as a passion project of Matt Scruggs, an epidemiologist and data science industry veteran. Combining the tools and tactics of epidemiology, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and complexity theory, we aim to modernize the tools and capabilities of public health for the moment we live in.
